I'm Judith Johnston, I design and make lampwork beads and jewellery and I live in the city of Brighton and Hove on the south coast of England.
My passion is making glass beads using an ancient technique called lampwork. I melt rods of glass in the flame using a special torch, wrapping the molten glass around a steel mandrel to form a bead. The design within the bead is made from the inside out, each layer created with meticulous care and attention to detail. Some of the complex beads can take several hours to complete and often include inclusions of precious metals, cubic zirconia and murrini (tiny chips of glass with patterns such as butterflies and fish)
This is good news for you because it means that all of the beads and jewellery available here are completely unique.
I love the meditative quality of melting glass in a hot flame, the depth and play of light on colour and the reflections and sparkle of the glass. Often thrilling, likewise frustrating, I love the unexpected, the reactions and the alchemy....no matter how deeply you delve a world of exciting possibility is waiting.
Established in 2002 my unique designs are inspired by the world around me and a deep love of nature.
